US defence chief Donald Rumsfeld made a secret visit to Iraq yesterday as rioting broke out at a funeral for two Iraqis killed by American troops.
He flew in to northern Iraq with no advance notice and heavy security surrounded the arrival of his air force cargo plane.
It was Rumsfeld's second trip to Iraq in four months, reflecting the US's push for faster progress towards a handover of power.
In Kirkuk, he met soldiers and air force personnel.
But his visit was overshadowed by the funeral violence in the town of Samarra.
A security officer was killed and mourners chanted pro-Saddam slogans.
